Acupuncture has a clearly recorded history of around 2000 years, originating from Asia, although some authorities insist it began over 4000 years ago. Its philosophy is rooted in the concept of Qi, a life force energy that circulates around the body via a network of pathways, it is thought that when the Qi becomes blocked or depleted illness can occur.
In more modern times we have come to understand some of the mechanisms behind acupuncture. Over the last 20 years there have been over 13,000 studies conducted in 60 countries providing evidence that acupuncture produces positive effects in many clinical areas. The World Health Organisation (WHO) recognises the positive effects of acupuncture in over 40 conditions. Science also shows us that acupuncture initiates a healing response in the tissues increasing nutrients, immune cells and reducing inflammation as well as stimulating the release of neuromodulators in the body helping with pain and our feel-good factor.
